artist statement. january eyes. My photographs explore the delicate nature of memory and childhood. The work focuses on the role that the past plays in the construction of identity.I photograph objects that have been saved by my mother and grandmothers and also objects that have been saved from my childhood. I incorporate these objects into environments and spaces to which I feel a connection. It is in these locations that the perspective of childhood and imagination is embraced and the depth to which the past permeates our identity is explored. Each memory that we have is created in some way, whether it be forged by our own perception or by the memories of others. Many memories are shared and then retold and become integrated into who we are, sewn into our individual experience. The origins of individuality become a little less clear when one realizes the influences that flood our experience. I am interested in looking at the influence of the past and the delicate place where childhood exists in our minds.
